  • The history of the Rochusmarkt goes back a long way before becoming today’s market. In the beginning of the 13th century, St. Nicholas Abbey stood in its spot but it burned down during the first Ottoman occupation of Vienna. In 1538 King Ferdinand I gave the land to the city of Vienna to use as a cemetery on its outskirts. Its small cemetery chapel later grew into a large baroque church in 1745.
