Wier, a funky little shop tucked in a cellar just off of the city’s main shopping strip, is what resulted after a couple of talented artisans met each other at a designer’s market. After many years as nomadic stallholders at Vienna’s markets, the local co-creators behind the label Nullkommasiebenprozent (nicknamed NKSP) and the design duo of Franz - the popular hipster, drawstring gym bag that looks like a teabag (known in Vienna as a turnsackerl), came together and gave their creations a home in the summer of 2015. NKSP’s organic fair-trade t-shirts with teeth - revealed with a cheeky grin - line the racks, with the beautiful, handmade turnsackerls, in various iterations, scattered throughout. Seamlessly integrated into the mix are young, small-time and scarcely seen labels that blend right into the streetwear theme, like the punk surfer Australian brand Afends, and you’ll also find some local designers including the Styrian surfing brand, Poleit, and unique wooden sunglasses from Gepetto. As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide.
