Vinothek St. Stephan

Don’t let the name fool you; the only thing sacred here is the wine – and we’re not talking about the holy kind you get in church. Housed in the historical Erzbischöfliches Palais (palace of Vienna’s former cardinals), this two-story vinothek is not only the oldest wine purveyor in Vienna, but also houses one of the city’s most elaborate whiskey collections. If you know your wine, then you’ll know as soon as you browse the shelves that whoever is doing the choosing is doing so with an educated palate. And you would be correct in your assumption – owner Ludwig Köstler, who took over the place in 2003, has been working with wine most of his life. He’s also an avid whiskey fan if single malt is your poison. Amateur wine lovers have no fear – there are plenty of smartly dressed shop assistants floating about to impart their wine wisdom, or there are helpful short descriptions attached to each bottle. There’s a particular focus on Austrian, French, Italian and Spanish wine here, but hard-to-find exotic drops, like Cabernet Sauvignon from the renowned terra-rossa soils of southeastern Australia, can also be found. Rare vintages are kept behind glass out back, while select rum, gin and vodka can also be found upstairs alongside the whiskey. From here, one can see Vienna’s famous horse-drawn carriages arranging themselves under the shadow of the Stephansdom.Show lessRead more
