In March of 2011 Susanne Gökcen opened her shop Su on Josefstädter Straße, the main thoroughfare of Vienna’s 8th district and home to the Theater an der Josefstadt. Su, which is short for the owner’s name, also translates to “water” and “aquatic” in native Turkish. It was in Turkey that Susanne and her then-fiancée picked out their wedding bands from local jewelry designers. It occurred to her that the jewelry aesthetic they found in Turkey was non-existent in Vienna, and from this realization grew the desire to share her newly found treasures with the people of Vienna. Initially she put on an exhibition displaying pieces she had brought back with her. It was very well received, and when a storefront on Josefstädter Straße became available in December of 2010, she took the leap to retail. Su’s jewelry uses bold metals like bronze, brass, and copper and marries them with materials such as semiprecious stones, pearls, textiles and sea glass, creating modern jewelry with an air of antiquity. These handmade works are not your run-of-the-mill delicate or understated pieces, they are mysterious, exciting – at times opulent – and exude an earthy elegance.  Show lessRead more
