Walking into Sous-Bois, a beautifully designed and one-of-a-kind papeterie in Vienna's boutique-filled seventh district, is like entering a pretty pastel paper landscape. Nestled within a charming set of wooden shop fronts, you’ll find its French owner Chloe behind the desk, with her face lit up by a computer screen as she works away on her graphic design projects. The two rooms full of carefully selected stationary, notebooks, paper clips, Japanese print paper, rulers, fountains pens and golden scissors, are a testament to the fact that there is no one better suited to run a papeterie than a graphic designer. The place made me wish I were back at school, or at least had something worthy to write in the pretty notebooks. Sous-Bois’ range is vast, and it’s one of the few places in the city where you’ll find stationary celebrities like Midori and Hay, which design nerds turn up for. Not to mention the prices are surprisingly reasonable. The only fault I could find with this store is that all the products are so beautifully arranged, you won’t want to touch them.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
