Shakespeare & Company

It's no secret that websites like amazon and Google Books are making life increasingly difficult for traditional neighborhood bookstores. Obviously, we're not internet-phobes, but we insist that a visit to Shakespeare and Co. remains the best way to procure English-language books in Vienna. Opening in 1981 in the vicinity of the Hoher Markt, Shakespeare and Co. was originally run by Mrs. Zobel, before being taken over by Mr. Perlaki, who apprenticed in the shop. With its squeaky wooden parquet and endless shelves of books on all subjects, this shop is a model for what a bookstore should be. Mr. Perlaki and his sister Shelia ensure that Shakespeare and Co. offers something for every member of Vienna's vast, English-speaking populace. Whether you're a U.N. employee looking to brush up on your knowledge of North-African history, or a literature student seeking a collection of short stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald, you're likely to find what you're looking for. If you don't, the staff will be happy to order a copy for you. Savvy bookstore fans are likely to associate the name Shakespeare and Co. with the famous shop in Paris that used to be a second home for the literary heros of the Lost Generation. Although there is no official link between these two bookstores, both share an undying appreciation for the written word. In print, that is. Show lessRead more
