Renate Asenbaum

The vintage and uniquely hand-made jewelry in this place is as charismatic and colorful as the owner, Miss Renate Asenbaum – a dame who creates baubles with character. Behind the narrow shop space with its red walls draped with jewelry, you’ll find Renate working away on her newest creation. And whether it’s a funky necklace made up of cowboy and Indian figurines or an elephant broach, we can guarantee it will be bold, beautiful, outrageous in flavor, and certainly one-of-a-kind. “I don’t make the same piece twice – I can’t, I won’t!” says Renate. Many of the broachs, necklaces, earrings and other random accessories are second-hand vintage pieces straight out of the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘50s. Trying to categorize this place any further is impossible– all we can say is that it is the kind of place where the unpredictable is predictable in the way of what you’ll find, and where Grace Kelly photos and naked Barbies are propped on the shelf. We think Renate sums it up best: “I only sell things I like, whatever else doesn’t matter – this is the way it should be.”Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
