Pöhl am Naschmarkt

This delicatessen is a veteran of the conga line of stalls that comprise Vienna’s most famous market. Born in 1994 from a passion for food, Pöhl am Naschmarkt has been drawing customers to the Naschmarkt even before it was the tourist highway it is today. This is where those with a craving for the delectable encounter like-minded foodies, and a whole lot of rare Austrian and Mediterranean speciality foods to satisfy their cravings; where cheeses and wines are talked about for hours on end (in between mouthfuls) and each product on the shelf has been sourced from small unknown artisans, personally discovered by store manager Johannes Lingenhel’s regular road trips with his partner, Christian Poehl, down south. And this is where the store’s strength lies: in its intimate relationship with suppliers who, more often than not, are a Nonna or a farmer in a small town that nobody has ever heard of and has only been found by Lingenhel and Poehl because of their determination to select only the best for their shelves. Take Paolo for instance, the store’s supplier of exquisite truffle (white truffle in October is not to be missed!); the rare Tuscan Prosciutto di Cinta Senese or the Cava Kripta - a spanish sparkling wine created from the limited harvest of the oldest vines in the Spanish wine region Penedès. If you’re into socializing and learning while eating and drinking, educational tasting events are held here regularly. To find the place, look out for the jams and juices spilling onto the market street, or listen out for the sounds of delight coming from those devouring the delectables inside.Show lessRead more
