Ludwig Reiter

The very first Ludwig Reiter shop dates back to 1884 in Vienna's 4th district, Wieden. Settling in Vienna from Czech Republic's Carlsbad, Ludwig Reiter I's shoemaking workshop soon started making custom-made boots and welted shoes for the Austrian imperial security. Today, aside from several branches abroad, Ludwig Reiter has established its flagship store in Vienna's historic Drei Mäderl Haus where Beethoven once lived. Within these historic walls Reiter showcases their hand made shoes and accessories. At Reiter, “tradition is by no means an end in itself, but seeks to transform and develop.” And so traditional methods are used to create classic shoes with modern influences. The company's shoes, boots, loafers, sandals and pumps are manufactured in the Süßenbrunn Manor which they purchased in 2010 and renovated from the ground up. The company is especially proud of the Goodyear welting method which Ludwig Reiter II brought back from his travels to the United States around the turn of the century, and continues to be practiced today. Reiter uses only the finest materials to create smart and elegant footwear for all seasons and activities from dress shoes to fur lined boots and summer moccasins. As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
