For those seeking European furniture originals from the Art Deco period all the way through the 1970s, Lichterloh is hard to beat. It was opened back in 1990 by Dagmar Moser, Markus Pernhaupt and Christof Stein, three friends who shared an appreciation for vintage furniture. They started out by acquiring old pieces at flea markets and even junkyards, with the intention of restoring and re-selling their recovered treasures. After saving enough money and purchasing a van, the trio began making trips to France and England, where they found more and more items to add to their collection. Twenty-odd years down the line, Lichterloh has become a landmark on the Gumpendorferstrasse. As one would assume, the stuff sold here is very "limited edition," so keep in mind the old maxim about what happens to he who hesitates. Thankfully, Lichterloh doesn't only cater to the well-heeled set; they also carry more affordable items that even poor, humble web-editors can afford, like Walter Bosse animal figurines. This gargantuan store is comprised of three rooms on street level, as well as a subterranean space filled with original pieces from all over Europe. Notable designers include (to name just a very few): Jürg Bally, Erwin Arne Vadder or Max Kmant.Show lessRead more
