Since learning how to knit from her grandmother, this craft has accompanied Laniato’s owner Topsy Thun-Hohenstein throughout her life and travels. It was in the United States that she first visited a knitting cafe and at this moment she had found her dream: to open one of her own in Vienna. Enter Laniato, a warm and welcoming shop in Vienna’s third district where you can find great ideas and all the materials for sophisticated knitting projects. A large communal table invites browsers to sift through fashion publications,  knitting magazines, and pattern books or exchange tips and tricks with fellow knitters – including the owner herself – while enjoying a coffee or tea. The store’s walls are stocked with colorful skeins that include cashmere, angora and pure wool. Ms. Thun-Hohenstein is happy to advise you personally on individual knitting project needs. Check out their website for updates on courses and workshops, or better yet, stop in to be inspired and plot your next project over a hot cup of coffee.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
