Ever since Kayiko opened its doors in 1998, Salzburg-native Karin Oebster has been wowing customers with her avant-garde fashion creations. Although everything Karin sells in her store was produced here in Austria, she receives her unicolored fabrics from suppliers all over Europe. Because most of these fabrics are patternless, clothes from Kayiko tend to be highly versatile and ideal for layering. In addition to her permanent collection, Karin designs two new collections per year which, as she says, are inspired by an attitude of looking towards the future, rather than paying homage to a bygone era. Karin also produces a few prêt-à-porter items on a monthly basis, resulting in singular sensations like her cashmere "living sweater." At the time of this writing, Kayiko is looking to expand its collection for men and children. Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
