Galerie V&V

Galerie V&V is not your ordinary high street jeweler. As its name suggests, the store operates as a gallery for objects that blur the lines between the applied, fine, sculptural and conceptual arts. The shop was founded by jewelry designers Veronika Schwarzinger and Verena Formanek (hence the name V&V) in 1982, and in 1990 moved to its current location on Bauernmarkt, just steps away from where tourists gather every day to watch the famous Ankeruhr deliver its ancient animatronic spectacle. Exhibitions rotate every six weeks, offering around seven artists per year the opportunity to use the entire storefront to display their works. When we visited Galerie V&V, a collaboration by object artist Ursula Guttmann and photographer Elisabeth Grebe was on display. Grebe’s photographs demonstrated how Guttmann’s wearable objects read as outgrowths or extensions of the human body. Gallery V&V strives to “free jewelry from its image as being articles of traditional value.” In this unique store, international artists demonstrate a vast range and breadth of what jewelry is and can be.Show lessRead more
