Dörte Kaufmann

Dörte Kaufmann's eponymous clothing shop is snugly situated one block from the Naschmart on the up and coming Kettenbrückengasse. Having received landmark status as the final home of Austrian composer Franz Schubert, the shop's building also houses a small museum dedicated to the composer. From knit sweaters, hats and mittens to skirts, dresses and blouses, Dörte Kaufmann refers to everything in her tiny cathedralesque shop as a "single series piece" because each is handmade and original. Trained as an art historian, Kaufmann has a penchant for mixing traditional patterns, styles and fabrics to come up with original pieces that defy our expectations for, say, an Austrian dirndl or African wrap – to name only two. Many of the pieces incorporate the work of women's collectives in Austria, Romania and more recently Africa, and are named "Alma," "Henni," or "Amalia." Men and children: do not despair, there are accessories for both in the shop and everything you see here (or that can be imagined) can also be made to order!Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
