Brunnenmarkt is a year-round outdoor market that runs along the Brunnengasse from Thaliastrasse to Ottakringer Straße, making up a total of six city blocks of market mayhem and earning it the title of Europe's longest street market. Closely packed stalls sell everything from one euro trinkets to whole chickens (4 for 10). One immediately gets the sense that here all prices are negotiable. Beginning around the early 2000’s the lower rents in the area surrounding this market began to attract young people and artists. It has since flourished into a mini, mulit-cultural epicenter, celebrated each summer by the “Soho in Ottakring” arts festival. Today the Brunnenmarkt is frequented by a lively mix of students, young families, old-time residents and newer immigrants from many cultures. A number of good restaurants and cafes have sprung up on and around the Yppenplatz, near the northern end of the market, that incite people from all districts to make this pilgrimage. Take a walk up the long market and discover another side of Vienna, taking in the sights, smells and sounds, and picking up ingredients as you go.Show lessRead more
