Taylor Stitch

Taylor Stitch is run by three owners pushing it’s custom tailoring operation forward stitch-by-stitch: Mike Maher and Barrett Purdum played lacrosse together during their college years in Boston and later the pair became friends with Mike Armenta before the trio moved to San Francisco in 2007. Each sharing the belief that “tailoring for men is unapproachable,” they struck out to offer customers a more accessible experience for buyers of custom men’s shirts.  The independent clothing outfitter Taylor Stitch designs and crafts items in San Francisco’s Mission District. The store is located on a street bustling with local merchants on both sides, and they see customers come from all backgrounds–skinny hipsters to 60 year old dads—each leaving in a more comfortable shirt. Their aim is to create well-fitted classic shirts with modern twists. “Style can be daunting,” says Mike Maher, so they go through the steps of measuring, selecting fabric, and choosing specific features of the shirt (button placement, pockets etc.) that is definitive to each person, offering a more democratic approach to creating a custom tailored shirt. A full line of menswear that includes jeans, ties, hats, belts, backpacks, and accessories is also on offer.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
