Paxton Gate

To step inside Paxton Gate is to step into another world. One second you’re on Valencia Street, strolling past bustling cafes, retail boutiques, and the lifeblood of San Francisco’s Mission District, and the next minute you’re inside a beautifully designed shop perusing various oddities and rarities of natural history. Where else can you shop for succulents while browsing amidst taxidermied unicorns and lions, snapping turtle skulls, and butterflies? Other beautiful curiosities and natural objects for sale include moss, ferns, bonsai trees, shells, glass eyes, and more. There’s also a large book selection on various types of plants, gardening, and other topics related to the store’s ethos. Paxton Gate is a retail operation but also a landscape design company—which is apparent in their store’s layout and by the large selection of flora in the rear of the shop.  Owner Sean Quigley has been in San Francisco since the early '90s, and the shop’s 20-year history has  made it a truly unique destination.Show lessRead more
