Marisa Mason

Tucked into Temescal Alley, a micro art and design district located in Oakland just off 49th Street, is Marisa Mason, a treasure trove for unique handmade jewelry. Formerly known as Marisa Haskell, the warm wooden interior features designs by the eponymous owner as well as rich textiles, candles and other small homeware objects by local artisans. A born and bred Californian, Marisa’s jewelry line has a distinct earthen, tribal vibe that her parents helped cultivate. “They are antique dealers and my aesthetic was certainly influenced by the Navajo jewelry, South American textiles, and old ranch style of the house we lived in,” she says. However, Marisa’s designs are also streamlined and chic - each trinket holds its own but also looks good stacked and layered with others. Statement pieces are important to the designer who, in her own words, “Started making big jewelry so I [could] continue wearing a basic uniform without being such a boring dresser.” As a self-taught jewelry maker, it took a leap of faith and a strong dose of confidence to start selling her wares in 2010. Currently she anticipates expanding into fine jewelry and a men’s line. Clients outside the Bay Area coveting Marisa’s necklaces, rings and bracelets can check her website for stockists elsewhere in California and beyond.Show lessRead more
