Crimson Horticultural Rarities

Crimson Horticultural Rarities, located in Oakland’s vibrant Temescal Alley, represents the perfect fusion of owners Allison and Lonna’s ideas. Both Allison, a public health researcher with a passion for horticulture, and Lonna, who had previously owned a gardening company in New York, started separately with their own independent businesses, but once they became friends and realized how much their goals and visions meshed, they decided to join forces. Thus Crimson was born, opening its doors in June 2011. The eye-catching storefront, with its dark palette and window displays bursting with succulents and other greenery, leads to an indoor oasis whose vintage apothecary vibe replete with dark wood accents and taxidermy is, as Allison puts it, “a morph of my own home.” Although at first glance the products lining the walls and shelves may seem like a random hodge-podge, the array is quite deliberate. “We’re really sensitive about curating,” says Lonna, who creates delicate butterfly taxidermies for the shop. All the lines featured by Crimson represent items that the owners would have in their own homes, but at the same time are still in keeping with the store’s overall aesthetic. In addition to plants, Crimson also stocks soaps, candles, ceramics and other decorative items, and provide floral arrangement and garden design services. Show lessRead more
