Case for Making

Case for Making, an art and design supply store that hosts frequent workshops in the Outer Sunset, began as a collaboration between four friends. In 2010, the group received a grant from Southern Exposure and, over the course of the next year, produced numerous art installations that were subsequently self-published in a catalog entitled “A Case for Making.” Two of the original quartet, sisters Katherine and Sarah Fontaine, decided to focus their efforts on Carville Annex Press, which continues to publish books as well as a quarterly magazine. The other members, Alexis Petty and Lana Porcello, dedicated themselves to creating the brick-and-mortar Case for Making, which encourages “process-focused, creative exploration.” Opening its doors in late 2014, the shop’s carefully curated inventory includes supplies for drawing, painting, calligraphy and sketching. The workshops, which are taught by friends of the owners as well as clients with strong art backgrounds, are intended to give participants the tools and the confidence to further explore a medium on their own rather than just leading them through step-by-step paintings like other classes. As much as Case for Making is about art and design, it also values education and community, welcoming creatives of all levels. Show lessRead more
