Borderlands Books

Alan Beatts had done a lot of things before opening his new and used science fiction bookstore in 1999. Private Investigator, night club manager, and briefly a used clothing salesman. But Borderlands Books and Café might be his longest serving endeavor, and with good reason. It’s now the largest science fiction bookstore in the United States, carrying 14,000 titles specializing in science fiction, fantasy, and horror. While Borderlands has many walk-in customers due to its bustling Valencia Street location, the shop is somewhat of a big deal in genre literary circles, with about 75 author events per year and international tourists popping in daily during busy months. The café attached to the bookshop is no less unique. You can sit and drink your coffee or tea, read a new book, or nosh on café treats while perusing one of the dozens of magazines the café also sells.  Not to mention, they never play music and there is no wi-fi, which gives customers, as the owner puts it, “an alternative to spending their time.”Show lessRead more
