Al's Attire

When walking up to Al’s Attire, one might think the displays in the window are décor for a store that sells regular shoes, hats, and formal wear. However, those items in the window are actually everyday tools of the trade for Al, who has been selling handmade garments in San Francisco for over 30 years. The hat blocks, wooden shoe models, scissors and tape measures are all used in making his custom designs. The shop is located in the historic North Beach neighborhood across from a world famous café and down the street from a bookstore made famous by Bob Dylan, William Burroughs, and Allen Ginsberg. The store is part workshop and part retail space for his creations which range from handmade boots, fedora hats, custom suits and many other accessories. Al keeps the customer involved in the process from the type of fabric all the way down to the style of button, allowing him to create custom “dream” suits for his clients.Show lessRead more

All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
