Going down Hayes Street past Patricia's Green park towards downtown San Francisco, it's impossible not to notice AETHER's Bay Area outpost. Designed by Thierry Gaugain and architects Envelope A+D, what looks like three shipping containers stacked precariously on top of one another is home to the LA-based performance outerwear brand. Founded by Palmer West and Jonah Smith, AETHER, the name an homage to Greek mythology and the elements, bridges the gap between technical clothing and sleek design. "We could either go with a flashy performance-driven brand and feel out of place in the city," says West, "Or go with a design-oriented label and sacrifice outdoor functionality. Our concept is highly technical with modern city-dweller aesthetics." From the blown-up nature photographs that adorn the walls and the Eames chairs that overlook Hayes Street to the clothes themselves, many of which hang from a custom rotating laundromat-like contraption, AETHER exudes subtlety, modernity and quiet sophistication. "Attention to detail is everything," says Smith, adding that anyone who does a double-take at the store's design will "find the same taste and appreciation in our jackets." The 300 square foot SF location mostly carries jackets, along with limited accessories like hats and bags, as well as layering tops and bottoms. But don't hesitate to ask for another size or style - there is a lot more product tucked away in the store's ingeniously hidden upper level.Show lessRead more
