The smell of the sea and the sound of waves were the last things you'd expect to find in Paris until Wait, a surf lifestyle concept store, opened its doors in the Marais in 2012. Brought to us by Julien Tual and Antoine Mocquard, the lads behind the wooden eyewear brand Waiting for the Sun, this boutique is a fusion of surf and other carefully curated objects that the duo are passionate about. Stepping inside Wait is like entering a laid-back clubhouse, its vibe is halfway between New York and California, the space somewhere between a showroom and your best friend's cozy apartment. Surfboards hang from the ceilings, and behind the counter you'll find their offices and a kitchen. A comfortable couch in the main store area usually has people lounging in it, reading a magazine or shooting the breeze with the staff. Aside from surf-oriented brands like Deux ex Machina, TCSS, Rythm and Patagonia, Wait also stocks menswear by labels such as La Paz or Portuguese Flannel, and other exclusive menswear items and small goods found here and there between two trips. And if that wasn't enough, Julien and Antoine are soon launching their own menswear line inspired by Brittany and coastal living, where every piece is made in France.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
