In 2000 stylist Roberta and her partner Bruno, an artist and designer, conceived of a concept store that would explore the relationship between art and fashion. Years later their boutique Spree is still going strong, located in the colorful Montmartre neighborhood made famous by the Moulin Rouge and fictional character Amélie Poulain. Organized like a gallery with a front showroom that opens onto the street and connects to the main store space via art-lined corridor, Spree could easily be mistaken for a designer’s workshop with its floor-length mirrors and industrial-chic furnishing. The arsenal of high-end labels reflects fashion houses that Roberta has developed relationships with since Spree’s inception, but also highlights up-and-coming designers. When the founders’ appreciation for art exceeded the original boutique’s space, they purchased a former stationer’s shop across the street. Preserving the original papeterie storefront, it now functions as a full-time gallery with rotating exhibitions.
