Les Archives de la Presse

Nestled on the aptly named street Rue des Archives, this charming shop transcends its primary role as a vendor of published texts, also providing visitors with a compacted history lesson in what the fashion, news and specialist press industries used to be like. Each section of texts is roughly organized into categories – meaning that a casual browser can peruse the hundreds of issues on offer, discovering many vintage gems, whilst someone with a more specific search in mind won't be frustrated by a feeling of disarray. The space itself is another reason that makes a visit here so attractive. A former art gallery, the first floor contains more modern texts such as lifestyle magazines and 20th century newspapers. But don't let this section sweep you away – descend to the cellar and you'll find hundreds of boxes of yellowing treasures that contain the most frail editions of daily newspapers, some more than a hundred years old. Whether you buy one of the numerous titles offered or not, you will come away with pleasant memories of this authentic and fulfilling Parisian literary experience.Show lessRead more
