When Yoya co-owners Cristina Villegas-Boujnah and Gena Gerbier had their first children in 2002, they found there weren't any children's stores that shared the same comfortable, aesthetic atmosphere you might find at an adult's clothing store. Furthermore, kids' shops didn't even think to allow room for strollers! So, in 2004 the women opened Yoya, a store dedicated to cool toys and designer gadgets that the whole family can enjoy. The store features its own small-production line of clothing and stuffed toys, such as their ever-popular super-snuggly elephants, camels and sheep. Yoya has also cooperated with The Ugly Dolls people to make a unique "Little Yoya" doll. The Meatpacking District shop also carries clothing and toys from Europe, Hong Kong and Australia — but in recent years has made an effort to add more domestic and up-and-coming NYC based designers. Toy birds, plushy pillow guitars, small size furniture, little one's "lounge wear," and jazzy leather boots are also to be had.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
