Although Bushwick may have eclipsed her hipster sister Williamsburg as New York’s trendiest borough, the neighborhood wasn’t always the bastion of street art and style that it has become - just ask Vashti Windish and Sara Villard, co-founders and owners of Worship. When they opened the vintage clothing boutique on Wilson Avenue in 2013, they built a solid clientele attracted to their curated selection of men’s and women’s wear, accessories, jewelry and shoes. These loyal vintage-lovers kept coming back for the constantly updated inventory and huge backyard, but were soon joined by tourists and neighborhood new-comers who were drawn in by the community vibe, pop-up events, BBQs and gallery-like space. Windish and Villard played music together before deciding to go into business as partners, and their hand-picked selection reflects their musical and artistic backgrounds; they are interested in “creative dressing” and are naturally inclined towards unique pieces with lots of character, like something you might find on stage.  They gravitate towards craftsmanship and quality over any one aesthetic, and offer items that will last over the latest disposable trend. In addition to the racks, they offer exclusive offers via Instagram - with the chance to buy or reserve without setting foot in the shop, as well as buy-sell-trade by appointment. Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
