WORD is a neighborhood bookstore that will remind you why print publishing will never slip into obscurity, even as we live on the front lines of technology. Owner Christine Onorati has worked with books for her entire life, first in publishing, and then as the proprietor of a bookstore on Long Island. She opened Word in 2007, and as soon as you step into the cozy Greenpoint shop you know that you’re in capable hands. Onorati does all the buying herself, choosing books geared specifically to her loyal following. Since WORD is small, its selection is fine tuned, which makes Onorati a curator as well. Greenpoint has the feel of a small town plunked down in a big city, a close-knit community that is reflected in WORD, which is enmeshed in the thriving local scene, showing the work of Greenpoint artists in the shop's windows, and generously supporting fundraising efforts for local art initiatives. When you go to Word you won’t only find a great book, you’ll also get an authentic feel for the flourishing neighborhood of Greenpoint.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
