Westsider Books

If you're the kind of person who believes that floor-to-ceiling shelving and a hint of must in the air are essential to good bookstores, then Westsider Books is the place for you. Ditto, if you've grown tired of the sterile atmosphere (oxymoron-alert) one finds in most bookstore chains. Westsider Books is a haven of “rare and used” treasures that will make you want to spend hours discovering new titles and editions from the days when “kindle” was still spelled with a lowercase k. Westsider's Rare Book Room also has some pretty impressive show-off items. These include a gorgeously illustrated, 1903 Essex House Press edition of Wordsworth's Ode: Intimations of Immortality, as well as a first edition of Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends with an original drawing by the author. But there's also plenty of books for one dollar or less. Many have claimed that Westsider is the Upper West Side's answer to the Strand, but this store is much more personal and intimate than the East Village behemoth. With an inventory that spans from children's books to graphic design, from fiction to cookbooks, Westsider is a great option for that proverbial rainy Sunday afternoon.Show lessRead more
