Uncle Funky's Boards

How can a shop born out of frustration evoke such passion? Ask Jeff Gaites, co-owner of Uncle Funky’s Boards, and he’ll tell you that the impetus to open the shop came from a dangerous lack of resources for longboarders in New York City. Fed up with the poor advice and limited range of products out there, Gaites and his wife, Kristen Howard, decided to fill the gap and started running a shop out of their apartment. As word spread, their business expanded and in 2011 they moved into the first location they weren’t also sleeping in. Today the store is a longboarder’s paradise, complete with a curated selection of boards made for all different styles and sizes, street decks and essential gear for beginning to advanced riders. Uncle Funky’s is the oldest independent longboard shop in the city and prides itself on quality products, authentic customer relationships and an intimate knowledge of the craft that comes from first-hand experience - Gaites has been longboarding in New York since the 1990s. Combine all of this with a laidback vibe, a warm welcome from the owners and a bowl of water for canine passersby, and it’s no wonder that Uncle Funky’s has become a destination for longboarders worldwide. As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
