Top Hat

In 2010, Nina Allen noticed a "for sale" sign in an empty window as she biked down one of her favorite city blocks on the Lower East Side. Then and there her distant plans to launch a store for Sweet Bella, her wholesale distribution company became a spontaneous reality. Top Hat opened to the public as the culmination of seven years worth of traveling in search of meaningful pieces of art and decor gathered from the far corners of foreign lands, from factories in Japan’s countryside to the busy canals of Venice, where Allen seeks the production of objects that are entrenched in cultural history. Speaking to her multifaceted appreciation of craft, Allen returns from her travels with unique pieces including bird calls, accessories, faux wood wallpapers, rugs, rolls of patterned masking tape, stationary, and even toboggans, each so special that customers would be hard-pressed to find them in the United States away from this concept store. Top Hat’s merchandise is varied but far from random. Every design is scrutinized to ensure its durability and quality. The store is stocked with a handful of customer favorites, but retains a fresh feel by constantly updating to showcase new designers’ work.Show lessRead more
