Three Lives & Company

Lost amid the cacophony of the publishing industry’s ongoing death rattle is the fact that many independent bookstores are doing fine. Sure, financial success is a relative term when it comes to anything literary, but becoming a neighborhood institution in the manner of Three Lives & Co. likely makes avoiding the corporate Faustian bargain worthwhile. Three Lives was founded in 1968 and taken over in 2001 by Toby Cox after he moved to New York and fell in love with the store. As it had been for 40 years, it remains a true reader’s bookstore where shelves must be browsed, pages thumbed, and the pace of modern life ignored. Like other great bookshops, Three Lives focuses on a few specialties, such as literary fiction, narrative nonfiction, hard-to-find small press titles, and up-and-coming authors. You won’t find mass-market genre fiction, self-help books, or other light reading here. Three Live’s other staples include rare cookbooks, travel guides, poetry, and a solid array of queer literature. The staff caters to regulars and has a working knowledge of the inventory. As a bonus, Three Lives occasionally hosts author events, but you’re just as likely to rub elbows with authors searching for their next read.Show lessRead more
