The Sea Grape

Once the site of long-defunct Hudson Wine & Liquor Co., the address 512 Hudson Street seems to have remained firmly in the clutches of alcohol-based commerce for most of its history. Since 1989 it has been the home of Sea Grape Wine Shop, possibly the most laid-back wine purveyor in the city. No Euro-inspired décor, no stuffy attitude, just bottles of wine and a couple guys who love talking about them. Self-styled “wine missionaries”, they consider it their purpose to simplify the wine universe and demystify the aura of privilege that continues to be associated with it. The fellas know their wines and wine history, which can be disarming given the unpretentious nature of their approach. While official tastings are held on Thursdays, if there’s a bottle of something open, customers are welcomed, even encouraged, to join. There is a clear appreciation here for small producers and focused production values. Sea Grape works with over 200 individual vendors to get a better range of varietals and regions and are constantly trying new wines. Due to this approach they tend not to specialize, preferring to focus on presenting the best wines currently available and rotating stock regularly to reflect this fact. A full range of liquors is also available that, like the wine selection, leans towards the unorthodox. Stop by for a studied, yet off-the-beaten-path take on your grape-based beverage.
