The Lobster Place

When Rod and Joan MacGregor started The Lobster Place in a small storefront on Amsterdam Avenue in 1974, live lobster was mostly found in New England, not New York City. But with an entrepreneurial spirit, the MacGregors set out in their little pickup truck for Maine twice a week to fetch 500lbs. of live lobster. Nearly four decades later, 11 trucks roll into Lobster Place’s retail markets in Chelsea, the West Village, and the wholesale market in the Bronx—supplying seafood to more than 200 restaurants in NYC and countless hungry New Yorkers. The Chelsea store (part of Chelsea Market) now features a sushi bar, something no one would have imagined in 1974. The MacGregor’s son Ian took over in 2002 and said, “We remain true to the same principles that Rod and Joan founded the company on—integrity, quality, and professionalism. Many of our original employees remain with us and I’m as proud of that as I am of anything else we’ve accomplished.”Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
