The Ink Pad

Although New York City is home to many art supply stores, only one is devoted to that old bureaucrat special, the rubber stamp. Since 1998, the Ink Pad has been the city’s premium source for pre-made and made-to-order maple-backed rubber stamps. This petite parlor of pressed rubber is stocked floor-to-ceiling with 10,000 stamps and every ink-related accessory and is double the size of owner Anna Chiang’s former novelty and balloon shop. Long a stamp and craft hobbyist, Chiang also provides supplies for paper crafting, card making, scrapbook making, and other mixed media forms. For those interested in the artistic side of stamping, the Ink Pad also stocks plenty of how-to/DIY books, but also offers weekend classes (like card-making or paper marbling) through the shop and nearby Westbeth Community Center. If you’re in need of specialized stamps but don’t have the time or energy to master burning images into magnesium, Chiang can fill your custom order in as few as three business days.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide.
