The Hole Shop at the Hole Gallery

The Hole Shop at the Hole Gallery is a hard-to-miss art and curiosity shop on the Bowery. Artists and art lovers stumble in from the gallery next door to find 'zines, art books, limited edition prints and artist-produced tchotchkes (like John Waters canvas totes, USB-activated floral animations, Mickey Mouse sculptures for adults etc.). A creative platform for both emerging and established artists, The Hole Shop holds screenings on their 24-hour flat screen (most recently a video screening by Maggie Lee of Vice Mag fame, while being photographed on the store’s table full of candy, her favorite medium) and hosts book signings and art openings (like the recent polaroid show by Bruce LaBruce) in a studio-sized interior painted matte black. The Hole Shop has been taken over by New York Art Department, a creative agency started by the same guys who started Alife, who curate the shop as they see fit. While other artist platforms might be driven by profit, the main objective at The Hole Shop is to put artists on, giving them the attention they deserve, perhaps the secret to their of-the-moment track record and cult following. With this level of dedication, you’d be hard pressed to find art like this elsewhere.Show lessRead more
