The End of History

Since 1993, Stephen Saunders has been selling an expertly chosen collection of decorative studio glass and ceramics from the 1920s to the 1960s at his West Village gem, The End of History. Saunders refers to his wares as “jewelry for the home” and has arranged the store by color to make it easier for his clients, many of whom are interior decorators, to find what they need. This makes visiting the store a sheer, refulgent delight. While most of the pieces here are from Scandinavia, Italy and the United States, Stephen sometimes can’t resist “mixing it up” if someone offers him something truly special, like a sterling silver Frederick Davis necklace with an amulet made from a terracotta mask over 2,000 years old (Davis made Frida Khalo one just like it!). Stephen comes from a family of antiquers, and though he originally came to New York as a stylist, he was soon renting several storage units to house his collection. In Saunders's words, “My mother told me it was either joining the family business or the insane asylum.” We're so glad he opted for the former!Show lessRead more
