The Demolition Depot

This 125 Street building-material shrine to all things amazing features a jaw-dropping four floors of lighting fixtures, porcelain waterworks, antique doors and windows, decorative sculpture and just about every other neat piece of architectural adornment. Demolition Depot opened in 1972 by then 16-year-old Evan Blum. The son of an architect, Blum was dismayed to see historical buildings distorted in the 1960s and 1970s, so he made it his life's mission to salvage what he could of their original fixtures, said Randal Dawkins, buyer for the company. "You're not going to come in and see a pile of lumber," said Dawkins. Instead you'll find even more than the four floors of astounding iron works and stained glass, plus, a huge backyard lot devoted to large iron gates and cement facades and sights such as an old elevator planted in the grass. If that's not enough, there is an entire second building across the street given over to fireplaces and mantles.Show lessRead more
