Tender Buttons

For a shop stocking such seemingly domestic items, Tender Buttons came from very revolutionary roots. Owner Millicent Safro and her partner were collecting buttons for a Happening in the 1960s and needed a place to house their ample stock, but when the buyers kept knocking, they decided to make this Upper East Side storefront a permanent home. The buttons in stock run the gamut from basic to whimsical to sculptural. You’ll find black velvets and grey horns, but you’ll also be inspired by ivory decorated with Inuit designs and silk baroque French portraits. Tender Buttons always stocks something seasonal, flower and seed packet buttons for spring, and plenty of cheery holiday designs for winter. A particular non-seasonal favorite are buttons featuring wedding portraits of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Customers range from costume designers to tourists to curious neighbors, but the shop is nothing if not cozy and welcoming. Aptly named after a 1914 Gertrude Stein essay, Tender Buttons will warm your heart and keep you fastened in style. Show lessRead more
