This upscale groovy bookstore on Greene Street is dedicated to museum quality art books which range from affordable pocket guides to handsome collectible tomes priced accordingly. Founded by eccentric comic book enthusiast Benedikt Taschen in 1980 in Cologne, Germany, this is the ultimate coffee table bookstore. Venture downstairs for the latest exhibits, usually tied in with their most recent publications. When we visited we saw a beautiful selection of Marilyn photos shot by Lawrence Schiller months before her death. You might also find on display things such as photos of The Beatles by celebrated photojournalist Harry Benson to promote the recently published signed limited edition hardcover. This is the place to discover art and design both new and old, popular and subversive, like the collection of Mid-Century Ads from the Mad Men Era, a softcover of futuristic architect Zaha Hadid’s projects, and the definitive collection of photographs telling the story of New York, which is always on hand.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
