Sweet William

You won’t find hot-pink sparkles or cartoon logos at Sweet William, a children’s clothing store committed to smaller, socially responsible clothing labels. Sweet WIlliam is stocked instead with unique and sophisticated pieces from local and European designers. Aimed for children ages 0-8, founder and Irish national Bronagh Staley has it right – independent, environmentally and ethically minded labels, and plenty of organic fibers that are soft to the touch and safe for children. Staley, who founded the shop in 2007, got her start as a fashion editor for Cookie Magazine and through that post learned about many of the designers she now stocks. The overarching feel of the shop is natural and handmade. Patrons wanting to make a solid investment in their child’s wardrobe or track down a special baby gift will easily sate their needs. Above racks of organic cotton and knits, the walls are lined with various toys, including some très cool – if mildly Tim Burtonesque – stuffed bunnies and imaginative hand-stitched pillows, which we were hard-pressed not to buy ourselves! As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
