Sandwiched between a dry cleaner and a pizza restaurant on Smith Street, it may be easy to overlook this Carroll Gardens gem. But don’t be fooled by its humble facade - Swallow has some of the most original decorative items in the neighborhood. The store was opened by Ria Charisse in 1998, after she graduated from Cranbrook with a degree in sculpture. This artistic background becomes apparent when you look at the texture and color of the materials that are displayed on Swallow's shelves. Another influence was Ria's father, a geologist, who undoubtedly bestowed on his daughter a love for natural materials and nature's beauty. In fact, father and daughter were together when they came upon the fieldstone from which the store's display cases are made. On these natural stone surfaces the endless landscapes of glassware, ceramics, jewelry and other art objects have an otherworldly luster. The arrangement invites you to stop and marvel at all these radiant pieces, many of them made by local glassblowers, potters, and jewelers.Show lessRead more
