Sunrise Mart

For Japanese ex-pats and Japanophiles, Sunrise Mart fills a vital niche. Much like a standard American supermarket, Sunrise stocks an extensive array of dry goods and staple foods—like rice, noodles and teas—the only difference being that they are all imported from Japan. Both common and exotic culinary goods are on offer, which is particularly helpful for those interested in making Japanese food at home, but may have had difficulties finding ingredients rare on these shores. Speaking of rarities, one of Sunrise’s specialties is fresh, sushi-grade fish unavailable elsewhere. A large selection of meats and produce from Hunt’s Point Market in the Bronx compliments the seafood options. For those just looking for something quick, Sunrise also carries their own pre-packaged meals and sushi trays. More adventurous types may be interested in curiosities like a container full of dried fish and slivered almonds or another full with small, dehydrated whole crabs. As if the store seemed remotely incomplete, one can also find kitchen and dining wares, cosmetics and bath goods, a wall of Japanese DVDs and assorted magazines. For potential patrons it is helpful if one speaks and/or reads Japanese, but the staff is helpful if there is trouble understanding what a product is. Familiar and curious customers alike are welcomed.Show lessRead more
