The lone survivor of Booksellers Row, the Strand remains a king among independent booksellers. From the outside, the bright red awning proudly announces “18 Miles of Books,” which at first glance might seem like hyperbole until you get a look at each of its six floors, the top most dedicated to the largest rare book collection in New York City. Check out the mezzanine and second-floor collection of art and photography books, and then head to the basement for an abundant selection of affordable used books, critics’ copies, and remainders. The Strand is in its third generation of ownership since 1927 and is currently operated by Fred Bass, who started working at the bookstore at 13, and his daughter, Nancy. In addition to books, the Strand also hosts a plethora of popular author events from readings and signings to writing, design, and photography contests. Stop by to please your inner bibliophile while exploring the rising stacks.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
