Saxelby Cheesemongers

The first shop in NYC to specialize exclusively in American cheeses, Saxelby Cheese gets all of its artisanal products from small, independently-owned farms. Most of these farms are located between Maine and Pennsylvania, but there are a few in Wisconsin and Iowa as well, so Midwesterners needn't feel slighted. Not that Saxelby is trying to overwhelm you with choice. As the diminutive Essex Market store space suggests, the emphasis is on having a few of the best locally-sourced products, rather than providing a smorgasbord of every curd creation under the sun. This means that Saxelby can maintain a personal relationship with every one of its suppliers, be it Woodcock Farm in Weston, VT, Seal Cove Farm in Lamoine ME, or the Lively Run Goat Dairy in Interlaken, NY. Saxelby also offers fresh mozzarella from NYC's own Alleva Dairy, which was established in Little Italy back in 1892. Although Saxelby Cheese is in ever-increasing demand with restaurants throughout the city, its personal, customer-friendly attitude remains unchanged. As we were told during our visit, Saxelby “sells trust, as well as cheese.”Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
