Retrofret Vintage Guitars

In 1983, Steve Uhrik transformed a former home for rescued animals into Retrofret, a repository of refurbished string instruments. Through the front door, past the pipe-organ repair service, and on the second floor sits a a small house’s worth of of rare and vintage descendants of the lute: guitars, mandolins, ukuleles, banjos, violins, cellos, basses, and, yes, even a few lutes. Everything in the store is a specialty: all rare, vintage models, nothing new or customized. Uhrik scours the world for the most unique and exquisite models or for particular pieces from his loyal clientele’s wish list. Among the items he has acquired are an extremely rare Gibson double-neck mandolin/guitar, some of Honky Tonk legend Lefty Frizzell’s guitars, and a few upright basses owned by sideman-to-the-stars, Teddy Kotick. Besides the extraordinary merchandise, Retrofret also boasts a full repair shop where Mamie Minch oversees a staff that fixes both acoustic and electric models. When seeking vintage gear head to Retrofret, because if Steve Uhrik can’t find it, it probably doesn’t exist.Show lessRead more
