Printed Matter

This bookstore is one of the last bastions of New York City’s great and gritty 1970s art world. Founded in 1976 by artists Sol LeWitt and Ed Ruscha, Printed Matter is the world’s largest nonprofit organization devoted exclusively to artists’ publications. There’s much to see in its constantly changing stock of more that 15,000 small-press and independently produced titles, including gems from hard-to-find Lapp Princess Press along with myriad 'zines, artists’ publications and monographs. Printed Matter is an enabler for the arts in many ways, including their role as organizer of the famed NY Art Book Fair, but also because the vast majority of their books and other wares are affordable and range in price from $10-$40. Since Printed Matter stocks so selectively that they generally have only five to seven copies of any one book, it’s almost as if you’re entering a whole new store each time you visit. Printed Matter believes that the life of art doesn’t stop at the museum or gallery and they’re devoted to making it possible for all everyone toown great art. Just step into the store, and you’ll be a believer, too.Show lessRead more
