Lynette Kirchner has never woken up and not felt like going to work. “I love every part of it - curating, merchandizing, buying, selling and styling,” she says of her Park Slope second-hand boutique, Pony. Kirchner’s enthusiasm and expertise are reflected in the color-coded racks that boast a hand-picked blend of contemporary fashion and classic vintage, all culled through a buy-sell-trade system that ensures a continuous flow of new pieces through the shop. Each garment passes through multiple waves of quality control, starting with a thorough laundering and ending with a meticulous steaming, so that by the time it gets to the rack every inch has been inspected. Kirchner draws from her history as a fashion insider to create the edgy, fun aesthetic of the shop, and takes great pride in assembling a skilled team that is passionate about fashion, knowledgeable about the merchandise and genuinely friendly and interested in each customer. The result is a delightful collection of clothing and accessories presented in a thoughtful manner and a staff that is always ready to help you find exactly what you’re looking for. As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
