Tucked behind the buildings on 17th Street awaits this odds-and-ends vintage shop. A secret garden of sorts, customers enter through a long blue-green passage that leads down a literal hall of mirrors to the tiny courtyard of a former blacksmith shop now overflowing with antique furniture, old photographs, and other collectables from the mid-19th century to the swinging '70s. Everything—from pots and pans to strings of pearls—is arranged estate-sale style and gives the feeling there may be a long-hunted-for treasure around any corner. Fine jewelry shares shelves with century-spanning silver spoons, leather gloves, ladies hats, old comic books, Al Jolson sheet music, and a few Broadway posters. Former flea market mavens Steve Cooper and wife Rachel opened the shop in 2006 after taking their eclectic collection to this unique Chelsea grotto so well shielded from the bustle of the street.Show lessRead more

As chain stores fill the streetscape the world over, this project is a celebration of the independent retailer. All stores featured on Shopikon have been hand-picked by our editors who have visited thousands of stores, and only the best of the bunch make it into our guide. We evaluate stores based on product selection, atmosphere, dedication to their specialty, and overall shopping experience, making sure that they are all worth your trip!
